Chapter Thirteen
Running would have been a good idea except for the fact the Pyro liked playing supernatural dodge ball and was good at it.
At the middle school Emilia and I attended while living with our aunt, dodge ball was called Kill and the students took it seriously. The way balls flew with enough force to give you a concussion if you were unfortunate enough to get hit in the head was one thing. The way my peers’ eyes gleamed with menace while unleashing their inner dark sides was another. You would have thought it was hand-to-hand combat, last man standing lives. As if all of us were soldiers instead of pimply, pubescent seventh graders.
Incidentally, I wasn’t pimply, but I wasn’t particularly swift or coordinated either back then, nor did I find it fun to jump around and lob balls at other people while yelling, “Kill!” at the top of my lungs. Not surprisingly, I’m not any more coordinated now, even though I was at that moment significantly more motivated to evade the “kill” since it meant being fried.
I have to hand it to Mikayla. After her first initial scream, she settled into duck, cover and evade mode, no questions asked. That’s what happens in a crisis, I guess. Survival first, questions later.
Still, I couldn’t help wondering what had gone wrong with Keisha’s protection wards and Gabe’s inherent protective presence. I also wondered where my guardian angel was.
Oh, right. Marcia needed his attention.
Three times, Mikayla and I attempted to get to the stairs. Three times we met a wall of flame, cutting off our path.
Over the sound of the fire bombs, sputtering and cracking flames, I heard Keisha shouting my name, but I couldn’t see her or Gabe. Dozens of fires lit the rooftop and smoke swirled and shifted like a ghostly cloud overhead.
Mikayla coughed and said in a clearly perplexed voice, “Nikita?”
I waved smoke away from my face and glanced in the direction Mikayla was staring. Fire ran in a straight line off to our right. It connected with a second thin line running along our left and forming a point. At the head of the point stood the woman in red leather.
The red script of the fire marshal’s business card flashed in my mind. Natasha. The Pyro.
Head slung low and teeth bared, Nikita moved in and out of the smoke, sneaking up behind her.
Crap. That’s what I needed. The dog to get hurt while trying to defend me and Mikayla.
Natasha waved one hand and the smoke closest to us lifted on a warm breeze. She hadn’t noticed Nikita slowly, step-by-careful-step advancing on her. Her hair danced like the fire, and glancing around, I noticed two important things. One, Keisha was trapped inside a circle of fire, and two, the lines of fire surrounding me and Mikayla formed a shape. An interesting shape that held us prisoner on all sides.
An inverted pentagram.
Of less importance was the fact Gabe watched from the edge of the roof, any concern for the three of us masked behind blatant irritation at all the commotion.
